If that’d been the only available parking space she could understand, but the lot was empty except for her Jeep and the SUV.Irritated, and determined to speak her mind—Roger was right, she was getting bitchier by the day—she headed around the SUV. Someone sat in the driver’s seat, so she looped the grocery bag over her wrist and knocked on the window. It rolled down, and the guy she’d seen at the convenience store earlier that day looked at her.“Hey, can you move?” she asked.

“You parked so close I need a can opener to get in my door.”“I didn’t think I was that close. Let me take a look.” He got out and waved a hand. “After you.”Something in those sad eyes gave Beth the creeps so she moved faster than she should have on the icy parking lot. The extra weight of babies and groceries threw her off balance. She slipped and leaned a hand against the back of the SUV to steady herself.“Let me help.” The sad man gripped her shoulder and slid an arm around her throat.

She was so shocked she froze for a heartbeat. Then she grabbed his arm and pulled down as hard as she could with one hand while she elbowed him in the stomach. A whoosh told her she’d hit the mark. She snapped her hand up, intending to hit him in the face with the back of her fist, but her feet slid out from under her.

She grabbed onto his arm to keep from falling, because if she landed on her back, she’d be completely helpless. He shoved a sick smelling cloth over her face. She tried to pull it away, tried to fight, but her feet skidded uselessly. Her stomach heaved, she coughed and her world faded away.
